Rwanda has made history by becoming the first African nation to launch a self-flying electric air taxi, underscoring its reputation as a hub for innovation and sustainable technology. The milestone demonstration took place at the Aviation Africa 2025 Summit in Kigali, where the EHang EH216-S, an autonomous aerial vehicle developed by China’s EHang in partnership with the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), successfully completed a live flight.
The two-seater aircraft, fully electric and capable of pilotless operation, is designed to ease urban traffic congestion, reduce emissions, and redefine mobility in fast-growing African cities. With a top speed of 130 km/h and a range of 35 km per charge, the technology represents a leap forward in sustainable transport.
President Paul Kagame, who attended the demonstration, described the flight as “impressive” and linked it to Rwanda’s vision of becoming a digital city of the century.
“If Dubai can rise from the desert into a global city, Rwanda too can build its future through innovation,” Kagame said.
Minister of Infrastructure Dr. Jimmy Gasore added that low-altitude electric aviation aligns with Rwanda’s long-term strategy for green mobility and smart city planning, offering solutions to urban challenges like congestion and pollution.
By leading this breakthrough, Rwanda has set a precedent for other African nations to embrace frontier technologies that drive sustainable growth. From fintech to drone delivery systems, Rwanda continues to position itself as one of Africa’s most forward-thinking nations.
With this achievement, Africa is rising and Rwanda has taken flight.
