Anthony Joshua to Ignite Spirit of Unity at #GatewayGames Opening Ceremony

Renowned British-Nigerian boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, will take center stage to light the ceremonial cauldron at the official opening of the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, officially designated as “GATEWAY GAMES 2024”, holding today, Sunday, May 18, 2025, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The grand event is set at the recently renamed M.K.O Abiola Sports Arena, Kuto, where the festival—tagged “GATEWAY GAMES 2024”—will be declared open by Vice President Ibrahim Shettima, standing in for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is currently on a diplomatic visit to Rome, Italy.

Also expected at the ceremony are Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, various State Governors, and prominent figures from both within and outside Nigeria, reinforcing the festival’s reputation as a national and international celebration of sports and unity.

So far, 32 state contingents have arrived in Abeokuta, flooding the city with vibrant energy and excitement. The festival will host approximately 10,000 athletes and coaches representing all 36 states and the FCT, competing across 33 sporting disciplines.

This edition also welcomes elite athletes, promising a high level of competition and performance.

Delta State, the defending champions from the 2022 edition held in Asaba, will aim to retain their title amidst strong national competition.

The Gateway Games 2024 not only showcase athletic excellence but also serve as a symbol of national unity and talent discovery.
